BBC News Website Wikileaks publishes

BBC News Website Wikileaks publishes ; A website has published what it says are 573,000 intercepted pager messages sent during the 9/11 attacks in the United States. Wikileaks says it will not reveal who gave it the messages - some of which are from federal agencies as well as ordinary citizens.

Internet analysts say they believe the messages are genuine but federal authorities have refused to comment. The attacks on 11 September 2001 left nearly 3,000 people dead. The messages are being published over a 24-hour period, ending at 0800GMT on Thursday. They are being released simultaneously on Wikileaks and social networking site Twitter.

'Live' broadcast

The website is broadcasting each message at the time it was sent originally in 2001.

The first message was from 0300 local time (0800 GMT), five hours before the first attack in New York and the last 24 hours later.

The messages are not all about the attacks. Some are mundane questions about what people are having for lunch.

However, many are about the deadly plane attacks and range from people trying to find out if their loved ones are safe, to government messages, to computer server errors.

They include messages such as

* This is Myrna, I will not rest until you get home, the second tower is down, I don't want to have to keep calling you after every event. Pls just go home
* President has been rerouted won't be returning to Washington but not sure where he will go
* Bomb detonated in World Trade Ctr. Pls get back to Mike Brady w/a quick assessment of your areas and contact us if anything is needed

New York's fire and police departments said they could not comment on whether messages purportedly sent from them were genuine while the US Secret Service refused to comment.

Pager company USA Mobility said it was troubled by the alleged interceptions, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Wikileaks allows people to anonymously post documents on the web, saying its aim is to promote transparency. It was created in 2006 by dissidents, journalists, mathematicians and technologists from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa. Wikileaks spokesman Daniel Schmitt said the messages were submitted anonymously to the site several weeks ago.

He told Associated Press: "From the context information that the source provided we have strong reasons to believe that this is valid data." He said the messages would help provide a fuller picture of what happened that day. Read More ..

MotoGP Stars at Carole Nash

MotoGP Rizla Suzuki rider Alvaro Bautista made a fleeting visit to the UK this week as he attended the Carole Nash Motorcycle Live show in Birmingham.

Bautista was the special guest on Tuesday at the UK's premier Carole Nash Motorcycle Live show, which is being held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, England.

During his one-day visit at Carole Nash, Bautista visited Suzuki's stand to sign autographs and chat with fans and staff about life in MotoGP.

The Spaniard was then guest of honor at the Riders for Health booth where he announced that he would be joining the MotoGP official charity for a fund-raising bike ride in Zambia in November 2011, to raise money to save lives in Africa.

Bautista will be joined on this unique motorcycle journey by former Suzuki MotoGP star Randy Mamola, who is a co-founder of the charity.

Bautista spent the day meeting and greeting more fans around the show, before taking part in a fun quiz on the show's main stage. A "Question of Bikes" was hosted by BBC TV's Steve Parrish and Bautista was joined onstage by former Suzuki British Superbike rider Tommy Hill and British Supersport Champion Sam Lowes.

The three went head-to-head in a well-fought battle against WSBK rider Sylvain Guintoli, BSB star Michael Laverty, actor Danny John Jules and speedway legend Barry Briggs, with the game finally ending in a well-deserved draw.

Bautista will next be in action at Sepang in Malaysia in early February for the first test of 2011. The start of the MotoGP season is scheduled for Sunday 20th March at Losail in Qatar.

Alvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki MotoGP) says: "I really enjoyed the show and it was great to see so many people having a good time in and around motorcycles. The quiz was fun - even if I didn't really know what was happening all the time - and it's always great to meet the fans."

"It's been a good opportunity to spend some time having photos taken with the visitors to the show and to do some autograph sessions. It's a fantastic event with so much to see and do, I'd like to come back as a visitor, but can it be when it's warmer next time - I'm not too keen on snow and frost!"

Finlay McAllan (Managing Director of Event organizers, MCI Exhibitions) says: "It was another brilliant day for us at Motorcycle Live and to have another one of the biggest names from the racing world come along to add their support was fantastic."

"Alvaro was a great sport and a brilliant ambassador for Rizla Suzuki and MotoGP; he certainly entered into the spirit of things and made many new fans in the UK. He seemed to really enjoy the รข€˜Question of Bikes' quiz that we arranged on the show's main stage and added greatly to overall feel of the event. We are very grateful to him for flying in from Madrid just for us and he is welcome back at any time."

Melbourne hit by flash flooding

Melbourne hit by flash flooding : MELBOURNE has been drenched by a short burst of heavy rain, with Melbourne Airport one of the hardest hit, receiving 30mm in just 30 minutes on the first day of summer. The Bureau of Meteorology issued flash warnings for Melbourne's outer suburbs as the storm passed from the east through to the northwest and then headed for Geelong, southwest of the city.

Senior forecaster Phil King said the CBD escaped most of the rain, with just 4mm falling between 3.30pm and 4.30pm (AEDT). "Given that it is peak time for people going home from work, and it's meeting our criteria for flash flooding, there will be substantial problems with that rain," Mr King told AAP.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said it had received more than 80 calls for help from the outer eastern suburbs of Croydon and Lilydale.

SES spokeswoman Jilly Charlwood said it received 65 calls from Croydon households and 18 from Lilydale, mostly from people seeking help after flash flooding of homes.

"We're advising people heading home to take care and if they see a flooded road, they should turn around rather than try to drive through it," Ms Charlwood said.

Rainwater flowed through the Croydon police station just before 3pm forcing the station to close and officers to shift to neighbouring Ringwood. About 50mm of water covered the floor of the station. The SES was still mopping up late on Wednesday afternoon.

Victoria
is set to record its wettest year in almost two decades.

Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Harvey Stern said the outlook was for close to normal rainfall in central parts of Victoria over summer.

"Notwithstanding it'll start off pretty wet and humid, as what we have at the moment, and the temperatures will be above normal," Dr Stern said of the summer forecast.

He said the state could expect maximum temperatures to average about 26C or 27C over summer, about one or two degrees above normal.

The above-average rainfall has delivered the biggest spring boost in seven years for Melbourne's dams.

Melbourne Water said storage levels had increased by a net 10.5 per cent of capacity - or 189 billion litres - to 52 per cent, the highest point for 2010. The major catchment areas had an average 373mm of rain over spring and the dams are at their highest levels since 2005.

Heavy rain at the end of November pushed Melbourne's rainfall for 2010 above the long-term average (of 647.7mm) for the first time in 13 years. Victoria's rainfall total has passed the 700mm level and the bureau predicts 2010 will be the state's wettest year since 1992 - when it recorded 850mm - but short of the 1973 record of 925mm.

The Australian's Victorian election blog 2010

The Australian's Victorian election blog 2010 : The Australian's Victorian election night blog tracked the twists and turns of a close vote. Read how the night unfolded.

11.27pm (AEDT). Pia Akerman reports: Labor supporters have booed while watching Ted Baillieu's speech on television at the ALP Broadmeadows function, shortly after John Brumby urged them to wait for a clear result. With his wife and children watching on, Mr Brumby said a hung parliament now seemed the likely outcome. “The work begins tomorrow,” he said. “If we get the chance to form government then I believe we will do better and provide the exciting, fresh new policies.”

Those gathered around TVs watching Mr Baillieu's speech shortly after taunted him to “go on, claim it”, demonstrating their revived enthusiasm after a grim start to the evening's results. The ALP function is now wrapping up, with buses on offer for the trip back to the city.

11:20pm (AEDT). Rebecca Puddy reports: The Greens election party is slowly drawing to a close. While the election certainly hasn't gone as well as they hoped when the writs were issued a month ago, for the hundreds of supporters attending the party tonight, the mood has been one of excitement and pride.

Despite the predictions Labor will retain inner-city seats, Senator Bob Brown says one or two seats could get across the line.

Richard Di Natale is optimistic the party will increase its presence in the upper house, believing the party has kept its current three upper house seats, with Western Victoria and Eastern Victoria also potentially falling to the Greens.

Regardless of the outcome, The Greens say they are happy with their campaign, anticipating they have increased their vote by 3 per cent state-wide. Revellers are now moving onto an after-party. The organisers have promised that, unlike the federal election after-party, it wont be held at the same place as the Labor after-party.Read More ..
