Lorenzo to defend MotoGP title with #1 plate - Racers Republic

Jorge Lorenzo, who rode with the number 1 on his Factory Yamaha during post-season testing at Valencia this week (pictured), has now officially confirmed that he will use the digit throughout 2011.

Lorenzo raced with the #48 during his debut 2008 MotoGP season, a number he had also used in the lower classes (except as the reigning 250cc champion), before switching to the #99 for 2009 and 2010.

“I’ll ride with this number (#1) because it can happen only once in a lifetime,” said Lorenzo.

The last time a MotoGP champion used the #1 was Casey Stoner in 2008. Seven time champion Valentino Rossi has always stuck with his #46.

The last time a 500cc/MotoGP rider successfully defended his title while wearing the #1 was back in 1998 with Mick Doohan (Honda).
