(CNN) -- Former world champion Casey Stoner is on pole position for Sunday's Valencia MotoGP -- the final race of the season.
Stoner continued his superb end of season form, which has seen him win three of the last four races, by qualifying quickest in his final race for Ducati.
The 2007 world champion finished 0.33 seconds ahead of new world champion Jorge Lorenzo on his Yamaha, with Honda's 2008 250cc world champion Marco Simoncelli in third.
It is the first time that Simoncelli will start a MotoGP on the front row of the grid -- and he edged out fellow-Italian and multiple world champion Valentino Rossi in the process.
Last year's race winner Dani Pedrosa - who is still feeling his way back to action after recovering from a broken collarbone -- will start the race from eighth place on the grid.
"I couldn't ask for much more out of this weekend. We've had a fantastic run, been very fast in every session and were able to do some good lap times," Stoner told the official MotoGP website.
"The championship for me this season has been long gone, but I've been going out and trying to win every race I can."
