Victorian election 2010 results

Victorian election 2010 results : A HUGE swing against Labor has brought down many long-standing MPs with the election results expected to see as many as 13 seats lost. Outer suburban Melbourne and key regions largely turned its back on Labor, and among those seats lost include: Mt Waverley, Gembrook, Carrum, Seymour, South Barwon, Forest Hill, Burwood, Prahran and Mitcham.

In the closest election since Jeff Kennett was knocked from power in 1999, there was a clear swing away from the Government to the Coalition -- mainly in Melbourne's east and south-eastern suburbs. Labor's frontbench losses included Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson (former Mitcham MP) and Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Maxine Morand (Mt Waverley) voted out of office. WikiLeaks release paints Russia as mafia state

Pakar Iklan WikiLeaks release paints Russia as mafia state ; The latest WikiLeaks cables depict Russia as a mafia state where corruption is rampant and criminals are protected by the police. The cables also contain accusations that Russia's prime minister, Vladimir Putin, has amassed a fortune through illicit proceeds and hides the wealth overseas.

But as the revelations continue, so too does the backlash against WikiLeaks, and tonight Sweden's highest court has refused permission to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to appeal against an arrest order issued over alleged sexual crimes.

PETER LLOYD, REPORTER: What kind of Russia does Vladimir Putin preside over? A Spanish mafia-busting judge Jose Gonzales, quoted in a US diplomatic cable, paints a picture of astonishing corruption.

The judge claims that Russia has become a "virtual mafia state" so that, "... one can't differentiate between the activities of the government and organised crime groups." And the, "... strategy is to use OC, or organised crime groups, to do whatever the Government of Russia can't acceptably do as a government."

The judge describes as accurate the thesis of the poisoned spy Alexander Litvinenko of links between Russian intelligence and the mafia.

It's all slander, said prime minister Putin during a CNN Larry King interview where he suggested there was an anti-Russian conspiracy afoot.

VLADIMIR PUTIN, RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER (voiceover translation): Some experts believe that somebody is deceiving WikiLeaks, their reputation being undermined to use them for their own political purposes later on.

That's one of the possibilities there and this is the opinion of the experts.

PETER LLOYD: The WikiLeaks founder is coming under increasing pressure. Amazon has stopped hosting the WikiLeaks website on its US servers and reports say he remains in the UK where police are awaiting instructions before arresting him on behalf of Swedish prosecutors investigating his alleged rape of a woman in August.

MARK STEPHENS, ASSANGE LAWYER: Julian has nothing to hide. His main interest is to vindicate his name.

PETER LLOYD: Julian Assange spoke to Time Magazine from an undisclosed lotion. He dismissed Hillary Clinton's claim that he's putting lives at risk, saying she should quit over leaked cables showing US diplomats spied on foreign diplomats at the United Nations.

JULIAN ASSANGE, WIKILEAKS EDITOR: She should resign if it can be shown that she was responsible for ordering US diplomatic figures to engage in espionage activities at the United Nations.

PETER LLOYD: At the State Department, they're calling Assange an anarchist.

PHILIP CROWLEY, US STATE DEPARTMENT: He is calling for the Secretary to step down at a time where he is trying to evade an act of warrant by Interpol.

The Secretary of State by contrast is in Kazakhstan, engaged directly with global leaders, working to solve the world's challenges.

PETER LLOYD: Here, the federal police are still trying to work out if any Australian laws have been broken by the Australian-born whistleblower.

JULIA GILLARD, PRIME MINISTER: I have been receiving briefings and we have a whole process to go through - you know, all of this information, I mean, millions of pieces of information, and assess the implications for us. So we'll work through that. And, you know, I absolutely condemn the placement of this information on the WikiLeaks website. It's a grossly irresponsible thing to do and an illegal thing to do.

PETER LLOYD: The White House has set up a special panel to assess the damage and find new ways to protect America's secrets.

Valentino Rossi Injury Update

It's been a bit over two weeks since Valentino Rossi underwent surgery on his right shoulder, and the nine-time world champion has entered his "first phase" of recovery. The Italian is hoping to be fully recovered for the first official tests of the 2011 MotoGP season at Sepang Feb. 1-3.

The 31-year-old Rossi had ten stitches removed this week by the Ducati Team rider's specialist, Doctor Giuseppe Porcellini, one of two doctors who performed arthroscopic surgery on the supraspinatus tendon and glenoid ligament on Nov. 14 in Cattolica, Italy.

The recovery is going as planned, and Rossi's physiotherapist says the first stage of his rehabilitation only places a "passive emphasis" on the MotoGP champ's shoulder to avoid any complications around the healing joint.

According to Dr. Porcellini, ff things go as planned, Rossi should be able to perform active movements and exercises with the shoulder within 15 days.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati MotoGP) says: "I've started the rehabilitation on the shoulder and the situation is improving. It's two weeks since the operation and I've now had the stitches removed by Doctor Porcellini."

"From today I'll be back in the gym, at least working on the rest of my body, and to work on the shoulder even if it is passive so as not to lose any mobility."

"In about two weeks I will begin active work in the pool and gym to be ready for the three days of Testing in February (Sepang). We must make progress, and we hope to be fit in time for the first Test of 2011 with Ducati."

The shoulder injury was Rossi's first of the 2010 MotoGP season, preceding his horrific accident during practice in Mugello. During that wreck, he broke his leg and missed that race and the subsequent three.

This was the first time Rossi failed to start an event in his professional racing career. If he started at Mugello MotoGP, it would have been his 231st consecutive start across all classes.

On top of the broken tibia, the-then Fiat Yamaha rider soon learned the shoulder injury appeared worse than expected; Rossi injured a tendon during the MX wreck, but never had any treatment. Although injured, VR 46 finished the 2010 MotoGP season in third place overall.

During the traditional post-season MotoGP tests at Valencia, Rossi could only manage 10th fastest on the first day, and 15th fastest on the second day aboard the Ducati GP11.

Profile Mervyn King Bank of England Governor

Profile Mervyn King Bank of England Governor : Mervyn King has been Governor of the Bank of England since 2003. Here is a profile of the guardian of Britain's monetary policy:

The son of a railway clerk from Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire, the Bank of England’s Governor was marked out as exceptionally bright from an early age. When he left Cambridge in 1969 he was one of just 12 out of 200 economics students to be awarded a First. Every one of his four papers was marked "Alpha", marking him out as one of the best economists of his generation.

Mr King's next 20 years were spent as an academic. He came to prominence as a professor at the London School of Economics, producing ground-breaking papers on tax which attracted the attention of Government officials.

By the end of the 1980s he had got a toehold at the Bank of England, as a member of its "court" or board. He finally joined the Bank as its chief economist in 1991.

It was Mr King who reinvented the bank’s dusty quarterly bulletins as highly-anticipated inflation reports for the world's financial press.

A huge sports fan, he peppered his latest speech presenting the report with cricket references, and once went so far as to arrange a game between Bank of England employees and ex-Villa players. Less obvious is Mr King's love of music.

As Governor, he has been criticised by one former Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) member, David Blanchflower, as being "the old iron fist of the Bank of England''.Alternative opinions, Mr Blanchflower said, were given "short shrift''.

However another former MPC member, speaking on condition of anonymity, disagreed: "Mervyn does have a forceful and bullying personality but that's not the same as 'group think'. "It's always a risk on committees, but the structure of the MPC makes it the least likely to suffer from 'group think' because it has such a rapid turnover of external members.

Google Editions eBook store coming this year

Pakar Iklan Google Editions eBook store coming this year : Google is close to launching its Editions eBook store offering paid-for titles, with the final shop ready by the end of this year, according to Wall Street Journal. Unlike existing eBook stores, which require a specific device or application to buy and view titles, Google Editions will be made available to all internet-connected devices and, as we've come to expect from the search giant, the service will run in the cloud.

Currently, the free Google Books service only allows public domain titles and extracts from titles in the Partner Program to be read.

"Many of the books in Google Books come from authors and publishers who participate in our Partner Program. For these books, our partners decide how much of the book is browsable - anywhere from a few sample pages to the whole book," says the Google books website.

The reach of the store could increase Google's chances of success, as it goes up against Amazon, which is estimated to have almost two-thirds of the eBook market with its Kindle reader. It's also though that Google will offer decent financial incentives to publishers and website owners that advertise books for sale on their sites.

However, we still think it has a tough job ahead. Part of the reason people buy the Kindle and other eBook readers is because the E Ink screens are possible to read in any lighting condition, just like a real book. With standard internet devices with LCD screens, reading outside or under bright lights just isn't possible.

Virgin Media plots a Tivo injection

Virgin Media plots a Tivo injection : Those concerned that the living room sofa is a scene of apathy will be relieved to hear that Virgin is promising that this is the start of a revolution. No more will the British public be bound to the whims of broadcasters, but instead they will be able to pick and choose what they want to watch, record the things that they have missed, enjoy on demand programming, and use web-based applications. And all in glorious 3D, HD, or standard resolution.

"This is a landmark moment in the UK's digital revolution and vividly illustrates why Virgin Media is the only company who can provide the ultimate digital lifestyle," said Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media. "For the first time, viewers will have a truly personalised viewing experience so they can get the most out of the wonderful worlds of the internet and TV all in one place."

The introduction of the service is game changing according to Virgin Media and brings with it a range of services designed to make the already fairly easy business of watching television even easier.

The firm said that the system has a recommendations engine that can learn what type of shows you enjoy watching and recommend others to you.

As well as suggesting that users watch even more television, the service will also fill their brains with 'rich' information about the actors, directors, and probably animals involved in the productions.

Another service called Wishlist will let viewers create a search based on their viewing preferences and build up a database of relevant recorded programmes, while links to Android and Iphone applications will let users stay on top of important things like Ebay auctions, Facebook and Twitter from their mobile phones.

Helping customers build up this mass of content will be a one terabyte set top box from Tivo that will be able to store as much as 500 hours of standard definition programming. Installation will cost £199 while monthly contracts will run £26.50 per month. Virgin Media will launch the service in mid-December
